Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

In 1922, the Department of Pharmaceutical Techno Chemistry was established in Tokushima Higher Technical School at the suggestion of Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, a native of Tokushima Prefecture, who discovered “Ephedrine” and founded “The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan”. The department joined the Faculty of Engineering when the University of Tokushima became a reformed national university in 1949. The department became independent as the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1951. Since then, research and research facilities have grown considerably.

Many people think that the purpose of enrolling in the Faculty is to qualify as a pharmacist, but this is not the case at Tokushima University’s Faculty of Pharmacy. The educational philosophy of the Faculty is to foster interactive pharmacist-scientist.‘Interactive Pharmacist-scientist’ is an unfamiliar term, but it was coined by the Faculty to refer to individuals who have acquired a wide range of knowledge and skills and can collaborate and respond across diverse fields of pharmaceutical science. Examples include pharmacists who are skilled in organic and physical che mistry, and drug discovery researchers who are familiar with medical practice. In other words, the Faculty aims to foster in dividuals who have the potential to actively cultivate their own fields of activity in any field or domain related to pharmacy, contributing to society by making the most of their qualifications as a pharmacist.
