The Department of Oral Pathology aims to provide original and innovative research from unique idea from pathology, using mouse genetics, cell culture technique and patient specimens to adress the following major research topics.

1. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms and biological significance of cancer cell cannibalism.
2. Identification and functional analysis of cancer-specific specialiized ribosomes.
3.  Identification and functional analysis of cancer type-specific novel protein complexes.
4. Elucidation of tumor immunity in oral cancer microenvironment.
5. Elucidation of the biological significance of sex chromosomal loss in cancer progression.
6. Establishment of salivary gland tumor models to clarify their pathogenesis.
7. Elucidation of the pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome.

Through these studies, we want to clarify the nature of cancer and the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases as well as the develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strathegies.

The Department of Oral Pathology is in charge of pathological diagnosis  in head and neck region and autopsies, mainly at university hospital, and aims to nurture oral pathologists with a deep understanding of systemic diseases as well as the head and neck region. In research, the malin goal is to elucidate the nature of cancer and autoimmune diseases in the head and neck region, and to expand this into a universal pathological mechanism for the whole body. Through these studies, we are also trying on the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strathegies. Furthermore, we place emphasis on unique idea, and aim to nurture the next generation of medical professionals who can carry out original and innovative research.
